Features . . . the MG102C is a compact mixer with 4 mono and 4 stereo channels. Mono inputs have 48V phantom power (switchable). Stereo inputs can accept either RCA or ΒΌ” connectors. Channels 1 and 2 offer insert connector, and compression which is an exclusive for Yamaha on a mixer of this size, and is very quick and easy to use with just one knob.
The sonic quality is said to be excellent my many users, and this mixer is easy to use and small. The input connectors are on the top, making it easy to setup in a live situation (for neater connections in a fixed studio setting, you could use right-angle connectors to keep the cables out of the way).
The EQ’s are 3-band up to channel 6, and 2-band for the other stereo channels. All channels also have aux-send to route the signal to external effects, and back again. The 12-segment LED level meters make it easy to set the optimum level for your mix. Users comment that it is very durable in practice.
One of the customer complaints was that the mixer doesn’t have channel mutes, and another customer would have liked to have USB for recording, but as one user pointed out, Yamaha have chosen to offer a good range of good quality features for the price, and adding extra features for the same price would inevitably require a decrease in quality, and most users like the quality as it is!
Alternatives to the Yamaha MG102C include Behringer Xenyx 802 (see our report), the Yamaha MG82CX 8 Input Stereo Mixer with Digital Effects which has less inputs but the advantage of built-in digital effects for a bit more money and gets a 5-star user rating on Amazon, or the Behringer 1202 12-Input Mixer which is slightly cheaper and has more inputs but no compressors or inserts.
Don’t forget that you might need microphone cables, microphone stands, microphones, monitors, and various instruments cables, (just click the links in this paragraph to see the latest Amazon prices for these).
